Shareware Instructions

Our Rodent Software titles are sold as shareware. Shareware can be evaluated for free and without risk. We strongly recommend that you first download the software and install it on your computer. Take it for a test drive and see if it performs to your satisfaction. If you like the software, you can purchase it. When you do, we'll send you a registration code that you can enter into the program to activate all program features. Because the software will already be on your computer, this method is fast, easy, and avoids all shipping and media charges. And because you'll have already used the program, you'll know exactly what you're buying.

Download

The first step to trying out our software is to download it from our web site to your computer. To download the software, go to our home page and select the software title you want to try. On that title's Web page, select the link that says "Download software" (located in the panel to the right side of the page). This will transfer the software to your computer. Please be patient as this could take a while. And be sure to remember the location where you save the file!

Installation

Once the software is on your computer, you need to install it before you can use it. Currently, all our Rodent Software titles are compressed into ZIP files. In order to access them, you will need software that can read ZIP files. (Newer versions of Windows will read ZIP files with no additional software.) If you don't have software that can read ZIP files, you can download, at no charge, the evaluation version of WinZip.

On most systems, you can install the software simply by opening the ZIP file and double-clicking the SETUP.EXE file. Please close all other programs before running Setup. IMPORTANT: When running the installation software, you may get a message about a version conflict. This message explains that a file being copied is not newer than the file already on your computer. If you get this message, be sure to select Yes, indicating that you want to keep the file already on your computer.

Once you've installed the software, you should be able to find it in the Programs submenu inside the Windows Start menu.

Registration

If you decide you are satisfied with how the software performs, you can register (pay for) it. To register a product, go to that product's Web page, click the Add to Cart button and complete the instructions. When you register the software, we will send you a registration code that will activate all program features and eliminate the shareware reminders, etc. (Please be sure to read our Shareware Return policy.)

When you receive your registration code, run the program and select the Register... command from the program's Help menu. There, you can enter the registration information that we sent to you. IMPORTANT: It is not enough to enter only the authorization code. You must enter all three fields exactly as shown.

Backup

We STRONGLY recommend that you backup the software and your registration information. Eventually, the software on our web site will be replaced by newer versions. If you purchase a new computer or replace your hard drive, you'll need to reinstall the software. Please put all the program files, along with the email we send with your registration information, in a safe place.

If you are backing up to floppy disks, you may want to organize the files so that you can install the software directly from those floppy disks. To do this, copy setup.exe, setup.lst, and the first .CAB file to Disk 1. Copy the second .CAB file to Disk 2, and so on. Copy any remaining files, along with the email we sent with your registration information onto the last disk. Note that some software titles do not include some of the files mentioned above. In those cases, just copy the files that are included.

Please follow the instructions above carefully. If you are inexperienced using computers, please see if a friend or family member can help you. If you follow these steps but still have trouble, you can get help by emailing support@softcircuits.com. If you email us, please be as specific as you can about what you have done and what the result was. The more we know, the better we'll be able to diagnose the problem you are experiencing.
